Now me, I think painting is an outdoor activity. The water ends up on the floor anyway and the paint ends up on the walls. But on a hot sunny day strip the kids naked and give them a range of brushes (inlcuding whitewashing brushes, pastry brushes, anything) and mixing bowls full of paint and let them loose on 20' of unrolled lining paper. Magic. Squeezy bottles, old roll-on-deodorants and plant misters full of poster paint are also fun for a change. Then when they're finished hose 'em all off before you allow them back indoors.

Baking, that's an indoor activity. Or lego. Or snakes&ladders. But not anything involving paint.
